Karpathos Island Information

The mountainous island Karpathos is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. With an abundance of streams, pine-tree forests and mountainous landscapes lying halfway between Rhodes and Crete Together with the neighboring smaller Saria Island it forms the municipality Karpathos. It is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and lovers of deep-rooted tradition, it has retained many traditional ways, including dress, customs and dialect.

Karpathos island comprises ten villages where In the southeast it is located the town of Pigadia know also as the capital and the main port of the island. Piagadia is surrounded by the villages of Menetes, Arkasa, Aperi, Volada, Othos, and Pyles. Additionally In the Northern part there are the villages of Mesochori, Spoa and Olymbos the last village in the North of the island, of great folkloric and architectural interest.

The island Saria was united with Karpathos in the ancient times with an isthmus, but an earthquake divided them.
